Thoughts on Gentilly

Trying to come up with a theme/concept for the park in Gentilly.  i think it is important that the inspiration comes from the people as well as the place. They are a diverse, hardworking neighborhood, and the design should somehow reflect the resiliency and resurgence they have shown.

Water plays a huge role in New Orleans.  Yet standing in the park you feel removed from it, blocked off from it by the levee wall.  Water (or at least an element or suggestion of water) should be utilized in the design.  Obviously the design should be eco-friendly, low maintenance, and serve the needs of the community for it to truly be a success. 

In terms of phenomena, what stood out to me were the broken and fractured sidewalks with plant life bursting through them (a little wabi-sabi eh?).   I’m still not sure how to capture this wild resiliency and incorporate it into the design, or if I even should.  Time will tell.
